For those that weren’t following our Instagram stories back in September, Trudi and I visited Bottomley Distillers on Saturday 21st September 2019 for their Gin School, an event that takes place every Saturday at their Lincolnshire Distillery.
The afternoon consisted of a distillery tour, a tutored gin tasting AND we made our very own bottle of gin to take home with us.
The event started with Alan serving up a welcome drink, Chloe enjoyed their new Valencian Orange Gin, served with Mediterranean Tonic & Trudi tried out their Spiced Gin, served with Ginger Ale, both of which went down very easily.
You certainly won’t go thirsty, there are plenty of spirits with a variety of flavours, textures and alcohol %! Alan will be sure to find you one that you’ll enjoy whilst making your own bottle of gin.
Distilling your own bottle of gin is somewhat exciting, Trudi & I get a little competitive every time! The outcome is unknown and deciding on the quantity of each botanical and how many varieties of flavours to try mixing is a difficult decision!
We were walked through the steps of how to produce a bottle of Britain’s most popular spirit and exactly what makes a ‘London Dry Gin’ (no that doesn’t mean it’s produced in London, it’s all to do with the recipe!). We tried our gin at each 10%, bottling our first at 54% and the 2nd at 42%.
They give you a recipe archive slip to keep hold of, so that they can re-create your gin for you at any time! We finished up by labelling our own creation, this was one of our favourites from the trip – how adorable are the lables you can personalise on your miniature bottles!?
From how they decided on their recipe, to the distillation process, hand-labelling each bottle AND the export process – we learnt it all!
We thoroughly enjoyed the comprehesive and knowledgable tour Alan provided of the distillery, explaining the use of each of their stills. Bottomley Distillery have even started producing their own uncashed Lincolnshire Grain Single Malt Whisky! After learning the art of distillation through his father, Alan was dedicated to following in Stan’s footsteps.
You might even get lucky enough to meet the two four-legged distillery mascots!!
If you think you’d enjoy the tour as much as we did, head over to the Bottomley Distillers Experiences Page. The tour we attended is priced at £145.00 for two people but we feel is worth every penny!
Thank you Amy & Alan, see you soon!
